FAQS

Spravato® (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray designed for adults with treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder with suicidal thoughts. It is a derivative of ketamine and works differently from traditional antidepressants — targeting the brain's glutamate pathways to produce rapid improvements in mood. At Psych Pointe, Spravato® is administered in a supervised clinical setting to ensure your safety and comfort throughout the entire process.

Spravato® is specifically designed for adults who have tried at least two different antidepressant medications without experiencing sufficient relief — a condition known as treatment-resistant depression. It is also approved for patients experiencing major depressive disorder with active suicidal ideation. At Psych Pointe, our providers conduct a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether Spravato® is the right option for your unique situation.

Spravato® is self-administered as a nasal spray under the direct supervision of a healthcare provider at our Psych Pointe clinic. You cannot take it home. After each session, you will remain at our office for a mandatory 2-hour monitoring period to ensure your safety. Most patients receive two sessions per week for the first month, followed by a reduced maintenance schedule based on your response to treatment.

One of the most significant advantages of Spravato® is its speed. Unlike traditional antidepressants that can take weeks to show results, many patients report noticeable improvements in mood and depressive symptoms within hours to days of their first few sessions. For patients struggling with severe depression or suicidal thoughts, this rapid response can be life-changing. At Psych Pointe, we monitor your progress closely at every step.

The most commonly reported side effects include dissociation, dizziness, nausea, sedation, and increased blood pressure — which is why every session is conducted in our supervised clinical environment. These effects are typically short-lived and resolve within the 2-hour monitoring period. At Psych Pointe, your safety is our top priority and our team is present throughout your entire treatment session to support you.

Spravato® is covered by many major insurance plans, including Medicare, for patients who meet the clinical criteria for treatment-resistant depression. Coverage requirements typically include documented proof that previous antidepressant treatments were not effective. At Psych Pointe, our team will verify your insurance benefits and help navigate the prior authorization process so you can focus on your recovery — not the paperwork.
